Back to Rehab

Back to Rehab

The physical therapist’s office has become a familiar place, much to my dismay.

I’m back in rehab. Third time in 3 years but I totally did it to myself…again. I touch on this here. With hamstring pull and torn rotator cuff in the past, I get to work on my back now. Today was my first real session, since the previous one was mostly eval and stretches. I think progress will be slow but I’m willing to work at it.

This machine shoots needles of electricity into my back.

I already have a routine when I come in for a session. First is heat and very strange “needles of electricity” or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) for my back. Apparently, it’s supposed to confuse the brain into not feeling pain. I’m not totally convinced but I’m open to trying. Then a targeted massage, which my PT calls soft tissue mobilization. Then stretching, and exercises.

Looking beyond my elevated legs, I can see a poster of happy running people. Motivation?

My PT is a young man about my daughter’s age, very nice, and knowledgeable, a PhD. I think I’m in pretty good hands with a skillful PT, an experienced trainer (No, I’m not stopping my training.), and a supportive husband. I now have a bunch of stretches to do multiple times daily and some exercises to start with that target the quadratus lumborum, the lateral glute muscles, and the transverse abdominus. I’m pretty good at complying with instructions so hopefully the process will go smoothly and quickly. We’ll see…
